Joan Rivers exercised her divisive sense of humour on Twitter tonight, quipping that she could slap Rihanna for confessing that she still loves Chris Brown.

The comic ended up trending on the social networking site tonight as fans reacted with disgust to her gag, lashing out at her for making light of the domestic violence that first ended the popstars' relationship.

The tweet in question said: "Rihanna confessed to Oprah Winfrey that she still loves Chris Brown. Idiot! Now it's MY turn to slap her."

One fan wrote: "That was really ignorant what Joan Rivers said. People act like domestic violence is a joke when it's not!"

Another retorted: "but if rihanna slapped u then ur face would crack".

In a tweet that has since been deleted, Rihanna responded: "@Joan_Rivers wow u really do get slow when you're old huh?", adding: "Slap on some diapers."
