Breaking up is never easy to do, especially when you're a celebrity, and especially when you're a celebrity with millions of Twitter followers. Then, you have to end things in real life and on the Internet.

For example, Russell Brand finally unfollowed soon-to-be ex-wife Katy Perry, Rihanna finally pulled the plug on her online relationship with Chris Brown, and plenty of other stars have "broken up" on the site as well. Check out a few examples of internet-style splits:

Russell Brand Finally Unfollows Katy Perry

Russell+Brand in MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals 2Real Breakup: Mr. Brand announced the couple's divorce on December 30, 2011, claiming he'll always "adore" his wife of 14 months.

Online Breakup: While the funnyman broke the news of the split, Perry pulled the plug on their Twitter relationship first. She unsubscribed from her ex's feed on January 20, 2012, shrinking her list of follows to 83. Four months later, Brand finally got around to unfollowing his ex-wife, who has since stepped out with a new man.

Rihanna Has Enough of Chris Brown

Real Breakup: These two had a sordid breakup in February 2009, one which ended with Rihanna taking a trip to the hospital and Chris Brown's arrest. Though they called their relationship off after the infamous domestic violence case, the two became friendly again in 2012, even collaborating on Rihanna's "Birthday Cake" remix.

Online Breakup: Things turned sour when Brown posted a link to his "Theraflu" freestyle, which included very curious lyrics about an ex-girlfriend: "Don't f**k with my old b**ch it's like a bad fur / Every industry n***a done had her / Shook the tree like a pumkin just to smash her / B**ch is breaking codes, but I'm the password."

Of course, Rihanna kinda figured out the lyrics were about her, since she's his only remotely famous ex-girlfriend and all. She then fired back online: "Aw, poor dat #neaux1currrrr" before unfollowing him.

Brown subsequently tweeted, "Assumptions! I didn't say any names so if u took offense to it then its something you feel guilty about." He then unfollowed Rihanna back. Figures.

Kim Kardashian Beats Kris Humphries to the Punch

Kim+Kardashian in FILE PHOTO: Kim Kardashian is reportedly filing for divorce from Kris Humphries after only 72 days of marriageReal Breakup: We all know this reality ! TV coupl e's marriage only lasted 72 days. Kardshian filed for divorce in October 2011, which means the number of days they were married is likely less than the number of times they cooed at each other on the Internet during their year together.

Online Breakup: Just four days after filing the paperwork, the brunette reality star axed her man online, too. She didn't actually tweet for about a week, but she promptly removed Humphries from her following list. Not long after, the NBA star deleted any and all of his Kardashian-related contacts, which shrunk his numbers by roughly 20 percent.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher Can't Make Up Their Minds

Demi+Moore in Real Breakup: After months of speculation about a split between this couple, Moore finally broke her silence. She made the divorce announcement in a statement in mid-November 2011, telling everyone she's chosen to "move forward" with her life without her husband of six years. Kutcher added his two cents on Twitter, writing he'll "forever cherish" the time he spent with his wife.

Online Breakup: Funny enough, Moore and Kutcher broke up on Twitter before announcing their divorce. The actor stopped following his then-wife in late September, and it appears she also quit his feed at some point around then as well. Sure enough, they both then re-followed each other and continue to do so. Worth noting: Moore has yet to change her Twitter handle to something other than @mrskutcher, but we imagine doing so is probably more hassle than it's worth...

Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard Quietly Quit Each Other

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Attend BAFTA Brits To Watch EventReal Breakup: New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard made it about two years before separating in November 2011. They ultimately filed for divorce in late December and neither star has said much about the split. Deschanel recently told an interviewer: "We're friendly. It's all fine."

Online Breakup: We're not entirely sure when these two stopped following each other, but we're guessing they did so under the radar sometime in the last few months. They didn't tweet to each other much over the course of their relationship, so it's not much of a surprise that they didn't continue to dote over each other's mini messages after the split. However, Deschanel is still following Allen Gibbard, who appears to be her ex's father. It's an oversight, we imagine.

Demi Lovato and Trace Cyrus Trade Twitter Jabs

Real Breakup: These young stars basically got together on Twitter in 2009 and called it quits a few months later in much the same way: in many passionate, 140-character-or-less messages.

Online Breakup: Lovato started the breakup banter, which quickly lead to the unfollowing. "Now listen I think you and me have come to the end of our time.. What'd ya want some kind of reaction? Well, okay that's fine. :)" she wrote. (The smiley added an extra online ! oomph to the jab.)

Miley's bro quipped back, referring to an ex-girlfriend's picture that remained on his phone: "It's crazy how this picture has stayed the background on my phone since before I left for japan. some things will never change. I guess I always stay the same...Trip to Malibu," he wrote.

Lovato then furiously typed: "I'm sorry, was that supposed to hurt? Hm.. Oh well :)"

She then ended the banter with a plug for her new album: "God is so good. I feel like nothing can bring me down no matter what! :) in less than 24 hours, I will be coming out with my second record." The end!
