Friends close to Chris Brown insist his flirty display at a nightclub in Los Angeles earlier this week, where he appeared to be getting close to singer Nicole Scherzinger, was just attention seeking from the star, but did reveal he was concerned enough about rumours to call rumoured lover Rihanna to explain.

Nicole and Chris were spotted getting close at Hollywood's Supperclub on Tuesday night with a source telling X17Online they were kissing.

A close friend denied the couple kissed but did imply Brown wasn't exactly innocent and purposefully got overly close to the star, just to show off.

Hes known Nicki for years so it aint no thing, a source told HollywoodLife.

He had a few drinks, was letting loose on the floor, got a little full and danced. That was it. He wasnt trying to gas Nicki up. He was just having fun with it putting on a show for people. Chris be doing s**t half the time for show.

Despite the innocent situation the 22-year-old still reportedly called rumoured lover, ex-girlfriend Rihanna to make sure she knew the full story, despite not actually being together.

The source explained, He aint with Rihanna. He love her, but he aint tied to her. He told her Ri nothing popped off with Nicki."

Nicole, who is currently dating Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, was quick to deny the claims through her rep.

A representative told TMZ.com: "There is absolutely no truth to the ridiculous story ... The photos that have surfaced are old friends who were trying to talk at a very loud club."

"I guarantee there will be no photos of them kissing."

The newest rumours about Brown hooking up with other women will no doubt come as a blow to girl! friend Karreuche Tran, who has had to deal with constant speculation that the star is cheating on her with ex Rihanna.

With such media attention, friends have reportedly urged him to be more guarded in his behaviour.

They said: Chris shouldnt be on display all like that in public and s**t. We be telling his a** that, but he wont listen.

The speculation comes just days after a probation hearing in Los Angeles regarding a failed drug test. Brown, who is half-way through a five-year probation sentence following his conviction for assaulting Rihanna, tested positive for marijuana in July.
