He's got a criminal record of domestic violence, so when cops raced to Chris Brown's Hollywood Hills home yesterday afternoon due to a reported domestic incident involving a gun, it surprised some when it was allegedly just a prank.

The ersatz caller claimed that a mother and father were in a fight and the father went to another room in the house to get a gun, and at that point the caller hung up, never mentioning it was Chris Brown's house, law enforcement sources report to TMZ.

But when the police arrived at the location there was no evidence of any dispute, or a gunman with Brown not even being home at the time.

This comes as one of the latest swatting incidents involving a string of celebrities, with the most recent one involving Kris and Bruce Jenner when someone falsely reported a man with a gun at their home.

LAPD law enforcement sources tell TMZ that they are determined to catch the culprits responsible for the prank.
